Dog park users in Montgomery County say they need a place where their pets can romp off-leash, but the humans aren’t happy about a $40 or more fee for an amenity that has been free.
“Why not charge people who bring children? They make a mess and need the same kind of facilities,” said Heidi Epstein of Bethesda, who takes her Labrador retriever, Coco, to Cabin John Regional Park.

WOODCLIFF LAKE — A 9-month-old German shepherd being raised as a prospective Seeing Eye dog was recovering at home Monday after being attacked by a pit bull.
The dog, Dusty, had to undergo four hours of surgery at the Park Ridge Animal Hospital on Friday to repair lacerations that extended from his ear down his neck, said Roger Woodhour, Dusty’s foster parent.

YONKERS—A Yonkers man has been convicted of felony aggravated cruelty to animals after he intentionally slashed his neighbor’s companion animal, a four-year-old German Shepherd dog.
Prosecutors said that on April 5, Andrew Owens, 58, of 715 Nepperhan Ave., armed with a knife, approached the animal that was restrained by a cord on the property of 705-707 Nepperhan Ave. in Yonkers, intending to harm the animal.

In response to inquiries by a number of concerned citizens, I must say that I am totally frustrated by the slow, soft and reluctant pace of justice in the case of The Pet Company.
Transcribed testimony from the original hearing has clearly established that the conditions existing at the Pet Company were hot, dirty and generally disgusting on June 15, 2010 — the date that animals were seized and removed from the premises. The court has received evidence that the air conditioning in the store had been malfunctioning for three weeks, cages were in poor condition with cracks in the grates or trays that would allow urine or feces to flow down onto animals below, and sick animals were not properly isolated or cared for. Specifically, the court records that “A German Shepherd was in isolation with no water” and that several of the animals tested positive for giardia — a serious and contagious parasitic infection.
