Police dog teams participate in field trials

ST. MICHAEL — For the dogs, it was playtime — if playtime is a chance to chase a bad guy and take him down.

For the officers, there was a little more stress involved as they gave their canine partners orders in front of a panel of judges.

About 70 canine units from across the Upper Midwest participated in the 2010 United States Police Canine Association Region 12 field trials on Monday and Tuesday in St. Michael and Albertville. It was the first time the trials were in Wright County.

‘Sarge’ the dog recovering well at dog pound

TOLEDO, OHIO – Lawrence Mick, 57, and Adam Collins, 35, are charged with firing at Mick’s German shepherd, “Sarge”, in the backyard of his East Toledo home Friday evening.

The German shepherd survived the attack and is recovering at the Lucas County dog pound. He still has six bullets lodged in his body after being shot in the head and chest.

Men charged in dog shooting

TOLEDO, Ohio (WUPW) – Two men were arrested in connection with the shooting of a dog in East Toledo.

Lawrence Mick, 57, and Adam Collins, 35, are facing several charges including cruelty to animals.

Mick is in the Lucas County Jail on a $20,000 bond.

Collins was found guilty after pleading no contest to the charges against him. He had a much lower bond and is out on bail awaiting sentencing.

Lucas looks to increase public understanding of service dogs

Joseph Lucas is used to going places and getting comments about his German shepherd, Harley. Although docile, her size and breed can be intimidating for some and bring about questions for many who see her inside area stores, businesses and restaurants.

While Lucas, 56, expects Harley to attract attention, he’s become increasingly frustrated by the lack of understanding people have for service dogs. “A service dog is not for blind people. A service dog is for disabled people,” Lucas said.

Injured Fergus Falls dog recovering after surgery

A German shepherd left for dead with a slit throat was recovering Wednesday, a day after surgery to help heal the dog’s injuries.

Star, who Daily Journal readers got to know in a Friday, July 25 story, is at a foster home in Clitherall recovering and preparing for an eventual adoption, said Ericka Stoltenberg, manager of the Otter Tail County humane Society in Fergus Falls.

Man savors memories of road trip

Call it Brain and Axel’s Excellent Adventure.

Brian Watts, a 37-year-old Colerain Township man, and his 11-year-old German shepherd Axel set out to see America in a black Toyota Four Runner packed with camping equipment and other gear.

Axel had a bed in the back seat. Brian drove.

Before the trip was done, the pair had driven more than 10,000 miles, seen two oceans, eight National Parks, visited a dozen states, nine capitals, 12 dance halls and honky tonks and stored a lifetime of memories.

Brian would need those memories for hard days ahead.
