Ron Aiello will never forget Stormy, the female German shepherd he trained during the Vietnam War.
One of the first U.S. Marine scout dog handlers in Vietnam when he landed in 1966, Aiello said he and Stormy had the task of going out ahead of patrols to sniff out bombs, mines, booby traps, ambushes and other threats to regular troops.
On one occasion, Aiello said he walked out into a field when Stormy stopped suddenly, alerting him to danger. He bent down on one knee just as a sniper’s bullet sailed over his head.

The German Shepherd Dog, also known as Alsatian is a breed of large-sized dog that originated in Germany which dates back in 1899. Developed originally for herding sheep but because of their strength, intelligence and abilities in obedience training, today they are often employed as police war dogs.
